Statement (9 June 2010)

The office of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjai released a response to the republication of the letter written by its head executive. Parts of the response released by the office read:

How is it that Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s remarks regarding the necessity of a lawful election, as the Friday Prayer Imam assigned by the Supreme Leader, are considered siding with a candidate? Had some been determined who should have been elected since before the election?

What kind of rookie mistake in politics is this that 12 years after the presidential election of the year ’76 (1997), first they shamelessly consider themselves the owners of the revolution and second even more shamelessly say that if it wasn’t for the remarks of Hashemi Rafsanjani regarding the crackdown on any cheating in the election, Khatami would not have become the president!? Isn’t this them confessing that from that same year they were trying to conceive the illegitimate seed of election forgery in the society’s womb?! Isn’t the 106 percent participation of all the population of one of the western provinces of the county in the election enough for the lying claimants of the Islamic democracy to be ashamed?!

Why don’t you say that the new wave of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s concerns for not honoring people’s votes and the health of election started when some of the influential individuals in charge of the election were bluntly stating that people’s vote in an Islamic government is ceremonial and decorative?

Why is it that when you want to state the sequence of elections in recent years and then analyze it based on your views, you become silent when you reach the 1386 (2007) election for the Assembly of Experts? Why is it that when asked about the amazing results of this election and the significant vote gap between Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani and the second person, they state the presence of his monitoring representatives at the polling stations across the province of Iran as the reason? Doesn’t this reason mean that if Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s representatives were not present at the vote counts the election result would have been different?

Today the silence out of consideration of the Supreme Leader which was pointed to in Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani’s letter [to the supreme leader] made it possible for a candidate (Ahmadinejad) to dare to lie and make false accusations on live TV and in front of a 50-million audience, and the biased newspapers make commitments to make anti-Hashemi titles for their newspapers, with or without excuse.
